Excavations at the ancient city that King David chose as the capital city of Israel about 1000 B.C. aroused the ire of members of an ultra-Orthodox Jewish sect. The protesters, despite assurances to the contrary from dig director Yigal Shiloh, believe that a medieval Jewish cemetery is being disturbed in violation of religious law. Israels chief rabbis ordered the digging stopped. Government rulings closed, then re-opened the dig--a victory for supporters of separation of secular and rabbinic law. Here members of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish sect confront police at a demonstration against the dig.

Gerd Ludwig/ASA / ASA, In 1830, Governor Arthur chose the Tasman Peninsula as the place to confine prisoners who had committed further crimes in the colony. He called the peninsula a natural penitentiary because it was connected to the mainland only by a strip of land less than 100m wide: Eaglehawk Neck. Between 1830 and 1877 about 12,500 convicts served sentences at Port Arthur, and for some of them it was a living hell. Today, the well-presented and informative historic site at Port Arthur is Tasmanias premier tourist attraction.

Unknown / WHS / Robertstock, House on North Henry Street. A view of a house at 524 North Henry Street, looking south at the intersection of Henry and Langdon Streets. This Greek revival residence was erected in 1851 for J.T. Marston. The location he chose for his house was then considered to be quite remote from the rest of the town, which was clustered around the Capitol. From 1909 to 1923, the house was used by the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity. From 1925 to around 1942 and again from 1946 until its demolition in 1962, it was used by the Alpha Chi Rho fraternity.
